JPG vs JPEG: the same image format
Two extensions, one format
A .jpg and a .jpeg file use the same image format. The shorter extension became common on older systems with three-character extension limits. This converter saves .jpg files.
When renaming is enough
If a file is already a JPEG, changing .jpeg to .jpg changes its name, not its image data. There is normally no need to re-encode it just to change the extension.
When conversion is needed
Renaming a PNG, HEIC or WebP to .jpg does not make it a JPEG. Convert the image so its actual contents match the extension. Re-encoding is lossy for JPG; keep the source if you need to edit it later.
